We recently tried Geocaching, which is an activity that involves searching for outdoor hidden treasures (caches) using a GPS and detailed waypoints (coordinates), along with other clues.  The kids love the thrill of being on a real treasure hunt!

There are caches hidden around many public places you pass by everyday -- over 2.5 million worldwide.  We've found them in NC, OR, and VA.

An iPhone app helps you find your way.

Example of a hidden cache container -- they can be as small as a pill bottle or as large as a bread basket.

When you find a cache, you sign the log book.  You can then take one of the items inside the cache container, as long as you leave something of equal or greater value in exchange.  

Items in a cache range from small trinkets and knick-knacks, like bracelets and necklaces, to larger items, like games and toys.

We went to the Outer Banks with some friends.  Stayed in Southern Shores near Duck and Kitty Hawk at a cabin called, "Yellow Brick Road."  The kids loved spending time in the pool and hot tub, and watching movies on the big screen TV.

It was warm enough to play in the water -- even Dad got in!

Did some boogie boarding.

Saw this cool tree and had to take a picture.

Visited Kitty Hawk to learn more about Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Played at the sand dunes.
