Christmas 2010

Decorating the tree...The kids LOVED putting ornaments on the tree, especially the angel. Note to self...Next year, use all PLASTIC ornaments...At last count, the number of GLASS ornaments that hit the floor and broke -- due to little hands -- was SEVEN.

Santa visited the neighborhood just before Christmas. This prompted questions from Gracie, like: "Daddy, why did Santa look 'dressed up'"? With a carefully crafted response, Santa's identity remained a secret. Katie would have nothing to do with Santa (note the staredown between Katie and Santa -- and the tears). At one point, Santa got too close and Katie literally took a swing at him...and grazed his cheek! Everyone erupted in laughter. Andrew made sure to tell Santa exactly what he wanted for Christmas -- a new Snow Globe (he broke the first one last year within the first 15 minutes).

Watched the Polar Express on TV on Christmas Eve, while eating popcorn and snuggling on the couch. The kids were on the edge of their seats most of the movie. The movie reaffirmed their belief in Santa......

Immediately after the movie was over, the kids went to work writing notes to Santa and preparing goodies for his reindeer.

New Christmas PJs the kids got on Christmas Day. They also got "Pillow Pets" from Munga and Grandpa in Utah, "The Night Before Christmas" book from Nama and Papa in Oregon (a new Hallmark product), scripture bags from Mom and Dad, etc. The weeks before Christmas were also filled with lots of family and friends, as well as some snow (but no baby...yet). All in all, a great Christmas. Happy Holidays to all!

Carving Pumpkins

Katie was trying to catch the ants that were eating the inside of the pumpkin, while Gracie watched.

Gracie wanted a beautiful flower pumpkin instead of a scary face pumpkin.

The kids loved scooping the guts out of the pumpkins with their hands. Daddy used a spoon.

Andrew wanted a scary pumpkin face so that it would "scare the trick-or-treaters."

Elbow deep in goop, but all smiles (at least a half-smile)!

Ice cold lemonade

Gracie, Andrew, Ella, and Jack wanted to sell lemonade -- and they did. They had about 12 customers over the 2-3 hours they were outside. They had an absolute blast! Gracie was the Equipment & Logistics Manager (she selected the location, the type of lemonade, the storage container, etc). Ella was the Customer Service Specialist (she made the customers feel right at home and informed them informed as to selections, pricing, etc). Andrew was the Quality Control Expert (he made sure the lemonade tasted just right -- many, many times). Jack was the Advertiser (he kept yelling "Ice cream lemondae" instead of "Ice cold lemonade"). Dad was the Money Manager (he helped divide the profits). All in all a good day's work.

One final ride

Twelve years later....it was time to let go. She still ran well, but with the new baby due in December we need a van -- but not three cars. Sold it for $300 to a newly licensed driver.

The Ranch

The Ranch

A friend of ours invited Sarah and I, John and Tara, and a few others, to their ranch about a week ago. It was a blast. We had a BBQ, went horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, ATVing, and just hung out and enjoyed the nice weather.
Our little cowboy was right at home riding Chester the Horse.

The kids loved playing on the island in the middle of the lake and rowing the boat.

Even Katie loved the horses, laughing all the way as she bounced around in the seat.

Gone fishing! Didn't catch anything, but she sure had fun.

Roasting marshmellows. That's Andrew front and center. He sure was sticky when all was said and done.

Church History Tour

The Palmyra temple as seen through the trees on the Smith farm near the Sacred Grove. Tim Holdman did the stained glass windows in the temple with the help of more than a dozen youth from Orem High School in the year 2000. He consulted with President Hinckley on the stained glass depiction of the First Vision. The "Hinckley Window" allows you to see out into the Sacred Grove from inside the temple -- which is unusual, since most temples do not have windows you can see out of. Where the window is now was originally supposed to be walled off as part of the administrative offices, but President Hinckley had them change the construction plans so that patrons could see from "one temple to another." Within the temple are also one-of-a-kind paintings of Christ by Walter Rane, which are unlike any I have seen before. Brother Richard G. Scott was taken back by Rane's paiting in the lobby of the temple when he first saw it.

The Sacred Grove where 14-year old Joseph Smith saw Heavently Father and Jesus Christ in response to his humble prayer. It is interesting how the sun shines through the leaves on the tops of the trees in the forest.

Niagara Falls and Hershey

The new "Blue Man Group" getting ready to brave the Falls by boat on the "Maid of the Mist."

Niagara Falls was larger than I had ever imagined. The mist from the bottom of the falls drenched us as we approached (thus the blue rain gear they handed out to everyone on board the "Maid of the Mist"). At one point Andrew was getting so wet, he shouted out "Peace, be still!" (he had been watching the Bible movie about Christ calming the seas before we came on out trip -- I was both proud and amused).

On the way back from Niagara Falls, we stopped by Hershey World in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It was quite the experience...The kids could make their own candy bar, take a tour of a simulated factory to find out how the chocolate bars are made, watch a 3-D movie, and more.

For only $39.95 you could own the world's largest Hershey Bar. We did not buy it, to Katie's chagrin.

Amish Country

We visited Amish country in August. We visited villages with names such as Paradise, Bird-in-Hand, and Intercourse. The latter gets its name from one of three possible explanations -- (1) an old race track, the entrance of which was known as "Entercourse;" (2) the crossing of two old roads that met here; and (3) a word used to denote "social interaction and support." One more fascinating fact about the village of Intercourse: Witness, an older movie with Harrison Ford, was filmed here.

Christmas in August! This place was awesome -- a 20,000 sq. ft. facility with themed rooms -- all dedicated to Christmas and jam packed with lights, trees, trains, etc. It was featured in Travel Magazine a while ago.

The 9-mile train ride from Stasburg to Paradise took 45 minutes round trip. The kids loved it. They have "coach" trains, "open air" trains, "dining cars," etc.

The kids had a blast planting vegetables this year, then watching them grow. Their favorite part was harvesting and eating them.

Katie helped herself to breakfast one morning when she got tired of waiting for mom and dad. She seemed to be pretty proud of herself.

We visited Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah this summer, too. The kids loved all of the flowers outside, and they loved pushing buttons on all of the video exhibits inside.

Katie is fearless. She has yet to meet an animal she did not like. She will feed them, pet them, hug them, ride them, and play with them. One of her best friends is Murphy the Dog next door. She knocks on the fence, then he comes over and digs a hole under the fence just big enough for Katie to put a cracker underneath.

The Fourth of July bike parade at our ward party. Gracie has learned to ride a two-wheeler. Andrew is riding with training wheels now. They are both getting quite good.

The Inn at Meander Plantation is a bed-and-breakfast in Orange, Virginia. It is located about 1.5 hours from Falls Church, Virginia.

Each suite is docorated differently and includes a sitting room, sundeck, and master bedroom. No television or other distractions.

The countryside is beautiful -- lots of vineyards, corn fields, and historical sites. We also visited Montpelier -- home of James Madison.

Disneyland

Went to Disneyland with Emy and Kevin and their kids, along with "Munga" and Grandpa.

Stopped by Legoland. Yes, that is a lego version of Woody -- Gracie's newest friend. Andrew LOVED building everything from trucks to fire stations.

Yes, we got 11 people on this 4-wheeled bicycle at Huntington Beach! Most of the passengers were freeloaders and did not have to pedal at all.

Capitol Tour

Uncle John came to Washington, D.C. for a work-related meeting. We were excited to see him. Andrew's first comment to Uncle John was: "You look sharp."

Plaque indicating where the desk of John Quincy Adams was located within the Capitol. Because the Capitol is dome-shaped, if someone whispers at this location you can hear them from across the room, as if they were talking loudly. Very cool!
